Hi Carl,
Thank you so much for your video. I am a student studying to be a Chaplin and motivational speaker. One of my goals is to learn how to introduce myself to individual people. This has given me so much clarity. I really appreciate the way you have kept it simple. English is my first language but I am severely dyslexic and find it hard to find someone who can teach me in a way I understand. YOU JUST DID IT.
Thank you so much.
My reply to Karen…

Wow! Thank you! You totally made my day
So happy to hear that the video helped. Good luck with your studies and goals!
All the best.
Carl

A question from Fatima about presenting an article analysis. I hope that by answering questions as blog posts, it will help others who may not see the answers in the comments.
Hello Carl!
I have a presentation, about analysing the article of Debra, “Marked Women, Unmarked Menâ€, please could You help me on this field, how can I start and finish, to what should i give more intention,
Thank You in advance.
Hi Fatima,
Thanks for your question.
“Marked Women, Unmarked Men” is a fascinating article. To present an analysis of it will be great.
Please answer the following questions.
- Who is the audience? Do they know the article?
- What is the purpose/goal of the presentation?
- Why are you giving an analysis?
- What parts of the article did you connect with?
- Can you relate the article to yourself of others around you? If so, how? If not, why not?
- Why should the audience care about your analysis?
If you can answer these questions, you will have a better understanding of what to say.
Good luck and hope that helps.
Carl
I received this question from sonya last Saturday and thought it would be a good idea to start sharing my answers as blog posts.
Hope you find this helpful, too.

My reply:
Hi sonya,
Thanks for your question.
Please answer the following questions. It will help both you and I to understand your talk.
- Who is the audience?
- What is the purpose/goal of the talk?
- Why are you giving the talk?
- Why should the audience care about your talk?
If you can answer these questions, you will have a better understanding of how to do the introduction. Your introduction should get the attention of your audience and help you fulfil the talk’s purpose.
Hope that helps.
Carl
What is the ideal amount of time to give an effective presentation? If you’ve ever watched a Ted video, you’ll have seen that some of the presentations are very short. In fact, some of them are only about three minutes or less. However, those presentations are highly effective and often very memorable.
I’ve never given a presentation at Ted, but I have given a short presentation in the past. So this week, you’re going to see a sample presentation of me giving a real presentation that is only two minutes and 37 seconds long.
But to make this more helpful for you, I’m also going to include an analysis of what I said and the key expressions that I used. (more…)
We hear a lot about using stories in presentations. In fact, I’m sure I’ve talked about it here on PresentationExpressions. But how easy or hard is it to include a story? Well, this week I want to share with you a simple presentation expression for how to start a presentation with a story. More importantly, I’m also going to show you what type of story to use. Let’s get started! (more…)
“Stop wasting time and cut to the chase.”
“I haven’t got all day, you know.”
“Quit jerking around and get to it.”
“I don’t have time for this.”
“Time is money.”
If you’ve ever been in a business situation of any kind or if you’ve ever seen a movie about business, then you’ve probably heard some version of those expressions. And with what I’m going to teach you, I hope you won’t hear anyone say any of those things to you, and you’ll be on your way to becoming a valuable member of your team.
