What is the ideal amount of time to give an effective presentation? If you’ve ever watched a Ted video, you’ll have seen that some of the presentations are very short. In fact, some of them are only about three minutes or less. However, those presentations are highly effective and often very memorable.
I’ve never given a presentation at Ted, but I have given a short presentation in the past. So this week, you’re going to see a sample presentation of me giving a real presentation that is only two minutes and 37 seconds long.
But to make this more helpful for you, I’m also going to include an analysis of what I said and the key expressions that I used. (more…)
We hear a lot about using stories in presentations. In fact, I’m sure I’ve talked about it here on PresentationExpressions. But how easy or hard is it to include a story? Well, this week I want to share with you a simple presentation expression for how to start a presentation with a story. More importantly, I’m also going to show you what type of story to use. Let’s get started! (more…)
“Stop wasting time and cut to the chase.”
“I haven’t got all day, you know.”
“Quit jerking around and get to it.”
“I don’t have time for this.”
“Time is money.”
If you’ve ever been in a business situation of any kind or if you’ve ever seen a movie about business, then you’ve probably heard some version of those expressions. And with what I’m going to teach you, I hope you won’t hear anyone say any of those things to you, and you’ll be on your way to becoming a valuable member of your team.

When you give a presentation, it’s important to remember to give little breaks to your audience’s brains. But what the heck does that mean, right? What I mean is, the human brain can only pay attention to something for so long and then attention starts to drift.
The additional problem is that people won’t remember what you’re telling them once their brains have gone off into la-la land. To prevent this, what you need to do is summarize what you’ve said on a regular basis during your presentation.
So what I’m going to teach you is an expression you can use to give a short summary before you move onto another topic in your presentation. (more…)
Hi, it’s Carl Kwan. Recently, I’ve taught you quite a few things about starting your presentations, which is something you should definitely be good at because you want to open your presentation on the right foot. So let’s say you’re now a master at beginning a presentation and you’ve done a good job getting through presenting your main content.
The next thing you need to get good at is ending your presentation… Maybe I should’ve said the last thing you need to get good at.
Anyway, that’s what I’m going to show you… A really simple and effective way to end your presentation. (more…)
Hey there, it’s Carl Kwan here. So in this video, I’m gonna talk about another way that you can use to start your presentation and get the audience’s attention. Now, this is going to be a really cool thing to learn because you’ve never heard this from us before.
And what I’m gonna tell you is that you’re gonna tell your audience that they’re wrong and that you’re right. (more…)
